Education and Certification

NUCA of Washington is proud to offer educational programming to both members and non-members that fosters our members' commitment to safe, responsible, and ethical job site practices and conditions. These programs include safety training, Dig Safe Certification, CESCL Certification, educational seminars and more. Please check out our list of certifications below for more information.

Dig Safe Certification

NUCA of Washington's "Dig-Safe Certification Program" provides training to contractors, excavators, landscapers, public works employees - anyone working with or around pipelines and underground utilities - to perform best digging practices adhering to Call Before You Dig Law (RCW 19.122) that went into effect January 1, 2013. The certification process will identify companies and field personnel who have taken the time to go through dig safe digging practice training and understanding local and national laws relative to pipeline and underground preservation and safety.

NUCA of Washington offers CESCL certification and re-certification. This training provides an understanding of the erosion process, measures for controlling erosion and sediment, best management processes,  and identifies regulations, compliance, responsibility, and liabilities. Certifications are good for three years and are submitted to Washington State's Department of Ecology. NUCA of Washington's training program also provides tracking of your certification and will alert you and/or your employer when CESCL certification is due for renewal.

 Flagger Training Certification

Certified flaggers are responsible for worker and public safety during road construction, utility work and maintenance operations. Because of this, the flagger must, through visual movements and appearance, establish authority and confidence so traffic will respond in time and consistently with the need to stop, change lanes, proceed more slowly, or maneuver as necessary around the work site. A valid flagger certification card is required when any flagging or directing of public vehicular traffic in the public right of way occurs.

First Aid / CPR / AED Certification

When properly administered First aid and CPR can save lives, reduce recovery time and quite possibly mean the difference between temporary disability or lifelong disability for the victim. These program participants will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of a variety of injuries and sudden illnesses. Crucial information on how to deal with these emergencies such as bleeding, shock, burns, strains, fractures, allergic reaction, diabetic and seizures will be provided to course attendees. Recognition of signs of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), heart attack, stroke, foreign body airway obstruction, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Bag-Valve-Mask techniques and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) will also be reviewed in this course.

Confined Space Entry Certification

Federal and State OSHA have set forth strict confined space entry standards for the construction industry.  This standard require companies to implement a confined space entry program when their employees enter confined spaces. A major requirement of a confined space program is providing confined space training for all employees involved in confined space entry work.

Trenching & Excavation Competent Person Certification

Compliance with OSHA’s Trenching and Excavation standards saves lives, and can help your company avoid costly OSHA citations and penalties. OSHA’s excavation standards require your company to have a Competent Person on the excavation site during all trenching and excavating operations. All employees must be trained in the hazards associated with trenching and excavation work.
